Expert Review for Mercury Mountaineer SUV

The 2010 Mercury Mountaineer is an SUV with a similar platform to that of its sister company's Ford Explorer. The Mercury division of Ford made a lot of effort in producing a luxury truck-based SUV, but didn't quite made it on par with existing crossover contenders. Part 1: Introduction

The 2010 Mercury Mountaineer is an SUV with a similar platform to that of its sister company's Ford Explorer. The Mercury division of Ford made a lot of effort in producing a luxury truck-based SUV, but didn't quite made it on par with existing crossover contenders. While it does have an appeal to that usual upper class Mercury target market as it provides lavish features, when it comes to performance, it might not be the most ideal candidate. There are other SUVS in the market that are far smoother rides and more fuel efficient based on reviews. For all its badass looks, the Mercury Mountaineer is only competent in the field of hauling and towing.

The first generation of the Mercury Mountaineer saw the light of day in 1997. It wasn't such a successful SUV back then as Mercury couldn't really justify slapping a higher price tag on a truck almost exactly similar to the Ford Explorer. Reviews back then wasn't too favorable for the brand either so they had to make adjustments to future models to make it more distinguishable that its close relative. Now on its third generation, the 2010 Mercury Mountaineer offers more extravagant features, especially on its interiors, to provide driving comfort. Many reviews out there gave the Mercury Mountaineer good points for its good-looking interiors. For an SUV-truck, the interiors of the car looks more like a Sedan; says one famous review site. Based on our review, this SUV can comfortably seat 5 people in its first and second row, with an option to seat more in the optional third row. The newest addition to the Mountaineer group has added Ford's MyKey technology to all the trim levels, making the 2010 Mercury Mountaineer a safer ride for younger drivers.

If you're not really looking for a luxury SUV with great towing power, you should also consider other makes and models like the Honda Pilot or KIA Borrego. Both cars are cheaper than the 2010 Mountaineer that has a base price of about $29,500. The fuel efficiency of both cars are better, running 17 miles per gallon in the city compared to only 14 miles per gallon on the Mountaineer. Reviews are still better for the Mountaineer when it comes to interiors, but for the price you should consider if you really need all that goodies or just want a nicely performing SUV. Towing power might be an issue for you and KIA Borrego is reviewed to be able to tow up to 7,500lbs which is far better than the 2010 Mountaineer.

Mercury Mountaineer SUV Pros and Cons

Pros Interior design of the 2010 Mercury Mountaineer received high praise in many reviews. It is designed for luxury and comfort which seems to be the main selling point of this SUV.

Pros The Mountaineer has a high towing and hauling capacity. Reviews calculate that it can tow a maximum of 7,200lbs with its V8 engine; that is about twice as much as other crossover SUVs in the market.

Pros Impressive sound insulation in place makes the Mercury Mountaineer a quiet ride.

Pros MyKey technology installed in the 2010 Mountaineer makes the car safer for young drivers. The system allows parents to put a cap on the speed limit and audio volume when their teens are driving.

Pros Based on reviews, this SUV has really good safety standards in place scoring well in both federal government and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety crash tests.

Cons The fuel efficiency of the 2010 Mercury Mountaineer is below average. With its V6 engine, it can only run about 14 miles per gallon in city driving and only 19 miles per gallon for highway driving based on actual reviews. It is slightly better when the V8 engine is in place but it still can't compare to more crossover SUVs out there.

Cons The V6 engine versions of the Mountaineer is a little disappointing. Most reviews say it can compare to other SUVs with similar engine in terms of performance and fuel efficiency.

Cons The price of the Mercury Mountaineer is on the steep side given its driving performance. Similar ride like the Ford Explorer cost less for just about the same specifications.
