Part 1: Introduction

The 2012 Chevrolet Equinox SUV Crossover is a great value - reasonably priced with all of the reliability and features of more expensive crossover SUVs. The 2.4 liter engine - direct injection four-cylinder - with six-speed automatic transmission is a nice balance of power and fuel-economy. With excellent gas mileage - 22 city and 32 highway - this SUV is great for daily driving. Highway range is around 600 miles, making this vehicle a popular choice for longer trips.

The engine is powerful enough to merge into fast moving traffic with minimal delay, with a 0-60 mph time of 8.7 seconds, and 182 of horsepower at 6700 rpm. Drivers will appreciate the extra touches, like acoustic glass and sound insulation that keep the cabin quieter than most similar engines. With easier handling and a smoother ride than other similarly priced SUVs, the Chevrolet Equinox SUV Crossover offers passengers the comfort of larger vehicles with minimal lean during turns which will appeal to car drivers. This is a departure from previous models, which were less popular for their bulky feel and difficult maneuvering. The Equinox SUV now exceeds the competition in every common measurement, including power, fuel-efficiency, and handling.

Five passengers will fit without feeling constricted, and the SUV offers plenty of cargo space at 31.4 cubic feet. Put down the rear seats, which can also be split 60/40, for a total of 63.7 cubic feet of carrying capacity. The Chevrolet Equinox SUV Crossover has the best of both worlds with the majority of the space of larger SUVs, but the sleeker feel of the smaller styles.

Many safety features come standard, such as dual front airbags, front side airbags, and curtain side airbags, as well as four-wheel-disc anti-lock brakes, electronic stability control, and traction control. In addition, the Chevrolet Equinox SUV Crossover has daytime running lights, a tire pressure monitor, and the OnStar system. There are several options that can be added for additional security, such as a rear park assist and a rearview camera.

Chevrolet Equinox SUV Crossover Pros and Cons

Pros Starting at $22,278, the Chevrolet Equinox SUV Crossover offers entry-level pricing with many standard features of more expensive SUVs.

Pros The vehicle gives great gas mileage, 22 city and 32 highway, exceeding all same-class competitors.

Pros The 4-cylinder engine is powerful enough to provide 182 of horsepower at 6700 rpm, however quality engineering has ensured that passengers enjoy a quiet ride, unlike most similar same-engine-size vehicles.

Pros New design ensures additional security in taking turns, and the SUV handling is more similar to cars than to larger SUVs. Enjoy the safety of StabiliTrak electronic stability control system, with traction control, rollover mitigation, and electronic trailer sway control.

Pros Reduced drag and a sleeker, more aerodynamic design on the Chevrolet Equinox SUV Crossover are both aesthetically pleasing as well as helpful in increasing fuel-efficiency.

Pros Passengers enjoy a smooth ride with standard 17-inch aluminum wheels.

Cons As a midway point between cars and SUVs, the Chevrolet Equinox SUV Crossover has neither the compactness of smaller vehicles nor the large capacity of bigger SUVs. Buyers that are focused on one or the other will be dissatisfied with a compromise.

Cons Interior materials could use some improvement, as the hard plastic takes away from the overall high-quality feel.

Cons While most common safety features come standard, buyers will pay extra for the highest safety options.
